If a company like Google builds the first AI it
could keep its source code secret.
If it needed to deploy it in publicly accessible
robots, it could use tamper-proof hardware.
Such a strategy could well corner much of the market
and might make it rather difficult for competitors
to get off the ground. They might even keep quiet
about its existence - for fear of the monopolies
and mergers commission breaking them up before
they were ready to take on the government:
"For 30 years I have been wondering, what indication
of its existence might we expect from a true AI?
Anomalous accumulation or creation of wealth might
be a sign, or an unquenchable thirst for raw information,
storage space, and processing cycles". Sound familiar?"
