Probability. And a 3D world with simulated humans,
who train the AI in real time.
Yuck, and yuck :-|
There are 2 things here. First, use of open simulated worlds, such as
Second Life, may be an excellent way to test and evolve general AIs.
We already have an open, simulated, networked world: cyberspace.
Second Life is a teeny, tiny subset of it.

By "cyberspace", I assume you mean the WWW.

....and chat, email, telnet, VOIP, torrents, etc. The internet.

However, I'm not sure the WWW qualifies as a "simulated world",

players, test perception software, etc.

Some of the simulation is done by the OS. But you are
rather definitely heavily immersed in a virtual world
whenever you are looking at your computer's screen.

IMO, much of the existing internet is quite a bit more
"AI friendly" than a simulated 3D world like Second Life,
in that there are bigger mountains of training data,
and most of it doesn't have to be interacted with in a
simulated world targetted at dealing with human reaction
times, but rather can be slurped up at broadband speeds.

IMO, Google currently have one of the best hardware and
"data" positions from which to build an AI - and oh! look:

``We are not scanning all those books to be read by people,”
explained one of my hosts after my talk. “We are scanning
them to be read by an AI.”''

That's why they don't care if the copyright laws let
them expose this data directly or not. In fact, it
suits them just fine if only they have verbatim
access to it.
