II am sorry to say it, but I suspect that it will be good versus evil

We already have that - with companies.

The main formalised restraints are legal ones - and AIs will
have to abide by those as well, if they want to stay plugged in.

Whether having an ecosystem consisting of huge powerful entities
mock-fighting each other on an economic battlefield is a good
idea in the first place is more a political question.

So far there have been few company HQs that have blown up under mysterious circumstances - but the WTC crater illustrates the possibility - and there are no shortage of cyber-DDOS attacks
on companies.

IMO, we should learn to do most such mock-fighting under
simulation - or in some other controlled environment - to
better ensure that no one gets hurt.
