Well I suppose I have difficulty understanding where Searle is going
with the argument. As you state below I certainly feel the idea of
understanding Chinese is in a sense an emergent property of the
system, and cannot be expected to be observable as anything more than
deterministic operations at a lower level, but once we accept Searle's
argument are we bound to a dualist view of the mind as something
different from, say, the liver? At the heart of it all I wonder if
Searle saying the kind of understanding a human feels capable of is
not an algorithmic process, and as such can never be artificially
recreated?
You should actually read Searle some time. He answers these
questions.
