That's perhaps a slightly cynical perspective, although I can see where
you're coming from. However in the sense that the aim of academic
research is to benefit the human race, it would be fairly selfish and
counterproductive to not eventually make the knowledge available to the
general public (or at least academia, but that's more or less the same
thing, now-a-days). Furthermore, such exposure exposes discoveries to
critical assessment, and contributes to thhe strenghtening of the
theory. Just look at how well open-source projects advance (well, the
ones people care about, at least).
