I searched and found this:
The "associations" are in the environment. All
you are storing is a number that reflects the magnitude
of alleged structural changes in the post-synaptic tissue
- not the "associations."
Now I pertially agree with him, but I really think the brain stores
more than this. It can store enough information for one to visually
recall (in their mind) a particular location. For instance, I can, in
my mind, picture the entire building, all the offices, and the faces of
everyone that works where I work. I believe this requires more what
he's talking about (though I'm not sure I completely understand what
he's trying to say - maybe he just can't communicate it well). So
basically the memories we store in our minds are representations of
real-world objects and concepts. True we can't store things perfectly
(e.g., you can't see a whole lot of detail when picturing something in
your mind - just key characteristics you've learned), but the more and
more we are exposed to the real-world objects, the more and more
detailed our memories will become. Of course, there does come a point
where we find little or no more characteristics to take in.
Now I would think the "magnitude of alleged structural changes in the
post-synaptic tissue" would have to include or even be representations
of real-world objects and how we associate them. And when I say
associate, I litterally mean the brain creates physical connections
between the two memories as they are stored in the brain. I'm not
saying I have all the answers or have this laid out perfectly, but I
really don't see how a person can deny this.
What he's getting at is that the entire common language of mental concepts
is ill-suited for explaining or talking about behavior.
I'm not sure I understand what you mean here in regard to the last
paragraph I wrote above. Are you saying a behaviorist would think that
what I said there is incorrect and silly?
