Hey Michael. I know I'm mixing things, but here's an answer to your
question from the other forum ... starts with the nasty "e" word, so I
thought I'd give the other forum a break ;-) ... see "Other
Publications", bottom of page for link ...
Actually I was not asking a question, just pointing to an article.
The brain is pretty much by definition a dynamical system, and dynamical
systems theory has been used to good effect (lots of papers), but Linda's
"principles" suffer from a bad case of "selective refutation" : compare
your spiffy model to "the" alternative (as if there were only one), a
strawman alternative held by no one, and argue for the superiority of your
spiffy model. It's a false dichotomy, which I thought the article I pointed
to did a pretty good job of demolishing.
Actually you are quite correct in that Linda uses the strawman form of
argumentation. Onus of being either a psychologist or philosopher, I am
afraid. However, I was using the paper as an example to show how the
dynamical perspective fundamentally differs from the computational
perspective, which was your original question.
Are you saying there is no difference? Sergio and Josh seemed to agree
with this, but I think they're mixing things, confabulation, as I
indicated over there. Also, you will notice Linda uses the word
emergence in the first sentence, and I didn't want to start the "e"
word debate up again over there.
