Re: Observations and Assumptions in "The Chinese Room" Arguement

Yes, but without comprehension it can't be considered intelligent.
There is a whole lot of B.S. going around that humans don't know what
is needed for intelligence. But the definition of intelligence
includes comprehension.

What is comprehension? Philosoply these days often resolves itself
around the meaning of words. In this case this is non trivial. It is
fairly easy to see what does NOT constitute understanding.

"Mi barco attavesta una cerradura"

is a very good example

What does? Alan Turing gave a rather subjective test. If we cannot tell
we are speaking to a computer that is a milestone in comprehension. If
we make this a definition it cannot be contradicted.

Eliza very nearly passed Turing and that was simple Enlish Google like
searching with no syntactic analysis. If we got

"Mi barco attravesta una éclusia" and had a relaxation system (El
barco es caliente!) the Internet, as corpus would pass Turing.

Notice that we have sidesteped the issue of consiousness and self
awareness. The ethical issues are now associated with privacy and
Police States, rather than that of conscious disembodied minds.

Could I now add my voice and say that these issues are with us now. The
conduct of Yahoo has been absolutely deplorable. I think we should
consider making this sort of personal information classified and
charging anyone else with espionage next time.
