I think consciousness is like temperature - there are varying degrees
of it. It's a measure of how aware you are of the world. An ant has
some, a human has more. Maybe a dog has more consciousness than man,
even though a dog is not as smart. Dogs seem aware of everything, much
more so than humans.
But humans probably are more aware of time (past and future) than
dogs, owing to our huge memory banks.
