I'm not sure what this post was all about, but clearly a mouse would
smell the cheese and socks, and then go up and sample a bit of each,
before committing to full-scale eating. The mouse would use several
senses in the process of filling its belly. If the sock didn't taste
good, it would likely just haul it back to its den to sleep inside of
when the weather turned cold.
