Re: Testing Consciousness

First, "consciousness" is a fuzzy word. There are at least ten
different
meanings spanning medical, neurological, religious, etc. Many of the
debates seem to be between people using separate meanings.

Second, it is not clear that a practical artificial intelligence has to
reproduce ALL the mental states of a human being, particularly all
the aspects of consciousness. But the border is unclear.
For example, it is increasingly recognized that emotional
undertones permeate natural human language. An effective
machine natural language interface may have to recognize
and generate some emotion.
