A Point of Inflection in Machine Intelligence

Here is a conjecture:
There exists a critical level of intelligence, K, beyond which a
society of such intelligences can create at least one instance of
intelligence, K', more sophisticated than itself. Since by definition
K' inherits the creativity, sociability and intelligence of K, a
*society* of K' if created can generate a
generation K" smarter than its own individuals. And so on ad infinitum.
Before K, intelligence on a planet evolves through natural selection.
After K, intelligence will develop by the efforts of previous
generations of intelligences.
(One may compare this point of inflection K with the point in history
when language came about and brought with it the exponential explosion
of technology on the planet. Each generation could learn from the
previous.)
Beyond K, I see the second explosion in the history of our universe.
The explosion of intelligence, capable ultimately of largely colonising
it eventually.
I wonder, is there any logical reasons K can only be asymptoted towards
but not reached? I wonder if man will reach this point. I wonder if
that will be the last invention of man, after which he will be
overtaken by machines in a matter of months.
