I am changing this plan - first I am looking into the work done by Thomas
DeMarse. He cultured a large group of about 25,000 rat neurons on a petri
dish and was able to make them demonstrate learning behavior. Since I am
most interested in computer simulations of learning, I will compromise from
the original plan of studying a live organism's nervous system, at least for
the time being. My new plan is to replicate his experiment several times,
making it progressively simpler.
rat neurons --> invertebrate neurons --> large invertebrate neurons
25,000 neurons --> 1,000 neurons --> 100 neurons
learn to fly a plane --> learn a simpler task --> learn an even simpler task
I will use the input/output data from the simplest iteration of the
experiment to create a computer simulation, then work up from there. The
thing that worries me is the resolution at which his experiments were done -
at the level of groups of neurons rather than individual neurons or
axons/dendrites. I want to increase the resolution, but to do so I must
develop and custom-fabricate my own equipment. Hopefully the low resolution
data will suffice.
Finally, these experiments will be accompanied by an aggressive marketing
campaign designed to draw attention to this field. The best case result
would be that people will start talking, private and campus labs will begin
research, and all of them working in parallel will be more likely to solve
this problem or at the very least spur its development faster than I could
by myself.
