Special Session on
Optimization by Estimation of Distribution Algorithms
http://learn.tsinghua.edu.cn:8080/2003315425/OEDA.htm

In the 6th International Conference on Simulated Evolution and Learning
(SEAL'06)
http://nical.ustc.edu.cn/seal06/

15-18 October 2006
Hefei, China

Deadline Extended to: 30 April.

***Scope and Theme of Special Session OEDA***

Recently, there has been a growing interest in evolutionary algorithms
that guide the exploration of the search space by building and using
probabilistic models of promising solutions. The way to make variation
operators more powerful and flexible is to replace traditional
variation of Genetic and evolutionary computation by the following two
steps: 1. Build a probabilistic model of the selected promising
solutions, and 2. sample the built model to generate a new population
of candidate solutions. Algorithms based on this principle are called
estimation of distribution algorithms (EDAs), but are also known as
probabilistic model-building genetic algorithms (PMBGAs) and as
iterated density{estimation evolutionary algorithms (IDEAs). These
algorithms introduce a new paradigm of evolutionary computation without
using conventional evolutionary operators such as crossover and
mutation. EDAs have shown to resolve a number of problems the
conventional GAs experience great difficult!
ies with and solve a number of difficult problems quickly, accurately,
and reliably. The proposed methods are increasingly used to solve
various problem of practical and theoretical importance. Theory was
designed to understand the dynamics of the algorithms as well as their
limits.

The purpose of the special session is to present and discuss general
issues of research in this area, including (but not limited to):
*recent advances in EDAs
*new theoretical and empirical results in the area
*application of EDAs to real-world problems
*hybrid intelligent techniques related EDAs and their use in
optimization
*promising directions of future research

The special session of "optimization by estimation of distribution
algorithms (OEDA)" aims to push onward the state-of-the-art in EDAs
both theoretical as well as empirical by
*providing an opportunity for researchers to present their latest work
and
*organizing a panel discussion on the most important aspects regarding
EDAs.

***Paper Submission***
