I don't know much about jazz, except that it seems to be driven more by
variations on harmony within chord progressions than by theory's rules
of melody or rhythm. Or maybe it's more accurate to say that jazz
starts where theory ends...

BTW, I assume you've looked at Al Biles' GenJam
(http://www.it.rit.edu/~jab). It sounds a lot like what you're doing.
I'm not sure how it recognizes motifs and then produces its variations,
but apparently it does it pretty well.
