AI planning in games

Hi all,
I am doing my undergraduate and currently I am looking at the various
projects on offer during this coming summer break(Australia). I am
interested in a couple of things, one is crowd simulation used in films and
stuff and the other would be AI in various realtime strategy games.
Two of the projects on offer are:
1. Building a general game playing agent for the General Game Playing
Competition organized by Stanford univerity.
2. Looking at planning in games and work on ORTS engine developed by
University of Alberta.
Does working on such projects help in any way if I am looking at a
career as a game developer or developer for simulation in computer graphics?
Next question would be does the choice matters to prospective employer (i.e.
they value knowledge gained in one particular project over the other). I am
new to AI field so hope someone can give some advice on this. Thanks.
Cheers,
Thuan Seah Tan
