Saffioti Fuzzy Behaviour - problem

Dear all,

I am going through A. Saffioti's material, in particular his PhD
thesis. When defining behaviours, for example the REACH behaviour
example in Section 3.6, there is reference to an update function, that
"sets the values of the predicates local variables from the current
state information".

Can someone please explain this?
