Dear list,

We are in the process of moving from a TServer/FlexES based solution
to a z9-BC.

It seems that we'll receive the software thru an offering called ADLT
instead of the usual ADCD package.

The big issue is that this would require us to buy a 3590 tape drive
just for software installation, as we don't produce any tape for our
daily operations (we deliver our software electronically).

So my question to the group is:

Does anyone happen to be in the same situation, and do you know if
ADLT can be obtained on DVD or even electonically.

Thanks a lot for your help

The ADLT is a "copy" of the same thing (system) that is still
distributed as the ADCD (on DVDs now). The problem is, what would you
do with a DVD?? How would you read the files, whether in DFSxxx dump
format or what?? The z9 cannot read the DVD directly, so you can't use
it. Since you don't yet have a operating system on the z9, you cannot
ftp files to the z9 and restore them.
There are some options if you convert your FLEX system to a
"FLEX-CUB",but this ends up being significantly more expensive than
buying a 3590. PWD members using zVM can install from the zVM DVD
media, but zOS is not "DVD aware".
A used 3590 is probably the best alternative, but your Business Partner
should have worked through all this with you in the early palnning stages.

Hello Mike,

Thanks for your reply. We also plan to have zVM installed on this same
machine on a separate LPAR.
And you're right, our Business Partner has made an offer for a used
3590, but the price ticket hurts mostly because of maintenance cost.
So, we are trying to find ways to avoid having to buy one.
To your knowledge, do you think we would be able to use zVM to emulate
a tape drive for a zOS host using a DVD full of sequential files
copied from tapes?
Our Business Partner is also investigating on how the latest HCM might
provide DVD support.
I was also thinking of building volume dumps on Faketape files on our
TServer, and finding a way to restore them under zVM to build a zOS
starter system.
We are not yet in a hurry to find a solution, our FlexES only expires
in next November, so we're trying to explore as many options as
possible to reduce the huge cost difference between a TServer and a
z9.

Best regards

Daniel
