Well, they also teach you to think independently or groupwise to accomplish
objectives and bring the theory into practice or practical.
Also see more partnerships with industry. We've got AIME, MINT, Foundry
programs to extend the learning into workplace and partner with business to
improve their processes and productivity. The feedback from doing something real
world, real time is truly educational.
One of hardest disciplines is Chemical Engineering. The summer lab between
junior and senior year is to build a distillation unit from scratch. The final
exam is to drink what you produce!
As a graduate lab assistant my favorite paper was 'Rocking nut meter and rat
zapper'. Guess as an aid project some therapist wanted an A/D method to
record patient's level of dementia via counting rocking frequency and after a
couple weeks moved on to other project of a Tesla coil like device to make
lesions on a rat to test recovery via different treatments. Biggest problem was
safety switch, the user tended to touch opposing appendage to 'see if it's own'.
