It depends on your definition of "obsolete." DVD-A and SACD have been
around for time now, but the good ol' standard audio CD has yet to be
rendered obsolete, at least not in the majority of homes. Keep in mind
there is going to be an HD format war as well, which could easily go on
for many years. Until this format war is over, regular DVD should likely
remain king and will certainly not be obsolete by anyones standards.

As other posters have noted in this thread, even a lot of the early
adopters are going to hold back because of the format war.

According to the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray camps, the players will be backwards
compatible with DVDs(thank god). So the transition shouldn't be nearly
as painful as going from VHS to DVD. Although there are A LOT of people
who are going to have to put down large chunks of cash to aquire HDTVs..
