The trip this year will start in Long Beach and end in Vegas. I will
be taking a friend of mine for the past 30 yrs. or so. She really
hasn't traveled much, but now that her kids are basically grown she is
set to start enjoying her life.
We will fly JetBlue from JFK to LGB and reside in Anaheim (Disney area)
for the weekend.
Sat. night we will go to the Universal Citywalk for dinner then head
down to Hollywood Blvd. so she can see the Chinese theater and the
names in the street. We will follow that up with a couple of rides up
and down the Sunset Strip to see all the sights we heard about when we
were growing up in the 80's. A midnight snack at Pink's will finish
off the night as we head back south to our hotel.
Sun.-- Up to Philippe's for a french dip sandwich and some nostril
clearing mustard then off to Dodger Stadium for the final game of the
season. Once we are able to get out of the parking lot after the game
it is off Santa Monica Pier to photograph the sunset. Dinner will
follow the back south to prepare for the trip to Vegas.
Mon.--- Plan on leaving Anaheim about 6am and arrive in Vegas about
10:30-11. Photo op at the Vegs sign*, followed by lunch at In-N-Out.
Park at the Luxor and show my friend the south strip and get my supply
of Mexican Coke. Drive up the strip to the hotel and check in and
relax.
Tue.-- Get up early and head off to VOF for sunrise! * Camera's,
tripod, and water in tow. After spending a few hours in the VOF I'll
take the scenic route* around to Hoover Dam and depending on how we
feel my do the tour. Back to the room to rest and power nap. Will
propbably spend the night wondering around Fremont and this will be my
gambling night. My friend doesn't drink or gamble but she is a fun
person and I plan on getting her lot's of freebies by having her sign
up for all the player clubs.
Wed.-- Day time is free time no plans, but dinner at the Palm and off
to see Human Nature then do the tourist thing on the strip at night
with the cameras.
Thur.--- Return rental car and fly home with some great memories and pic's.
Now for my questions
What exit is the best off of 15 to get to the Vegas sign? I've never
seen it as I usually fly into town.
Pulling up to the Hotel what is the procedure for the Valet and
Bellhop? What lane am I looking for and who gets tipped and when?
Anyone know of a really good spot to catch the sunrise in the VOF?
What is the most scenic way around lake Mead fro the VOF to the dam?
Where is a good place mid strip for brunch before the flight home?
Will be staying at the Mirage or V.
Is noon early enough to leave the hotel and return the rental car and
get through security for a 2pm flight?
I think that about covers it. Really looking forward to this trip and
I promise a trip report when I return.
Nice itinerary, but if you're not doing the Disney/Orange County
scene, you'd be better off getting a hotel in Santa Monica or
Hollywood.
To get to the Las Vegas sign, get off the 15 at Russell, go east to
Las Vegas Blvd, then turn right.
When you pull up to the front entrance of any hotel, you'll see a lane
marked "Valet." Just pull up in that lane, tell the valet you want a
bell hop, and they'll take care of it. Tip the valet $1-2 when you
pick up your car, and the bell hop $1 per bag. When you get your
room, go to the bell desk and tell them what room you're in. If you
want to play in the casino for a while rather than go up to the room,
tip when you tell them what room you're in. Otherwise, you'll have to
go up to your room and wait for the bellhop to bring the bags up.
I live in Anaheim, near Disneyland, so I know that it's a four hour
drive plus whatever stops you make. You'll not have any trouble with
traffic at 6 a.m., it will all be going the other way. Once you're
past Barstow, the price of gas goes way up. There is an Arco station
at Ghost Town Road that is very reasonable, and is the last place with
reasonable gas prices until you're in Las Vegas. On that note, gas us
usually 5-10 cents cheaper in Nevada than California. I assume that's
the difference in state taxes.
Have fun, and if you do stay in the Disneyland area, I might just bum
a ride to Las Vegas with you!
