Don't get me wrong...I have asked for advice here, and received excellent
tips and information, all of which is going to make my first stay in Las
Vegas much better than it otherwise would have been.
HOWEVER -- many, many of the posts here seem to be nothing more than
juvenile taunts from apparently mean-spirited people who enjoy baiting
each other and then seeing how rude/insulting/threatening they can be.
It goes on and on and on...all apparently under pseudonyms and aliases
from people who probably have never met each other in person. Weird. More
like alt.vitriol.las.vegas.
What a shame this is -- this could be a much more valuable resource if
people didn't have to wade through all of the garbage to find -- and
provide others with -- information about Las Vegas.
I suppose now I have set myself up as a target for abuse myself, but I
felt that somebody should say something about the elephant in the room.
And if I do suffer an onslaught of name-calling, then I guess I will have
proved my point.
Anyway, thank you to all the people who have provided me with info -- it
feels great to be able to go somewhere for the first time and feel like
you know the lay of the land a little bit.
I'll post a trip report when I get back, for those who are interested.
Regards,
Stephen Johnston
Well asked, Stephen. I, too, have asked the same question. And, trust me,
neither you nor I were the first to ask.
Compared to many, I am a relative newbie here. There are some really
great/smart/nice/helpful folks on this NG. BUT, it's hard to wade through
the *** to find them, their brains and information.
One of my most recent posts here asked 'how am I -- who work 12 hours a
day -- suppose to keep up with this group?' While my inquiry received
several replies, I found none all too helpful.
Sadly, most often I very briefly scan the messages posted in the past day or
two (which currently number 367), see if any are either addressed (PING) to
me or if they are titled something which REALLY interests me, and then mark
ALL (others) AS READ.
In theory, this newsgroup is good. It's even great. And, as mentioned, I
know there are some GREAT folks here. But, I suppose, it all comes down to
freedom of speech.
I've followed newsgroups and message boards and chat rooms and forums since
the day I bought my first computer. And I've found they are ALL the same.
In one way or another, sooner or later, they all get off topic. They
argue/banter, they all have their "kings" and "queens" ... and, let's not
forget, their never-ending supply of assholes.
I love to talk/argue almost anything. Politics, religion, why people who
eat raw fish (sushi) are nuts, et al.
What I *wish* is that those on this group who wish to banter about matters
other than "vacation.las-vegas" would start different newsgroups. I'd
follow. But, in them, limit the talk to the subject of the group. But that
will never happen.
As I said above, "sooner or later they ALL get off topic". So, I'm resigned
to delete (and/or mark "as read") most all messages here -- and hope I
didn't either overlook something interesting or important, or offend anyone.
I've learned that rants have absolutely no effect. Except to, perhaps,
incite more rants. (Which means there will be even more messages to
delete/mark as read tomorrow.)
That's my rant. I'm way too tired to make it grammatically correct.
.... And the beat/delete goes on.
