Golden Nugget vs Flamingo

Ok, so now, after reading the threads about transportation up/down strip,
I'm starting to be nervous about staying downtown at Golden Nugget. Since
I'm going with a newbie, I know we'll want to see Bellagio fountains, MGM
lions, Ceasar's shops, etc. Don't want to stay at Mandalay which also has
nice pool. Should we consider the Flamingo instead? Choosing Flamingo
because it has one of the top rated pools, is affordable and at center of
strip + connects to monorail.
I think I'm really obsessing too much over where to stay for a quick trip.
Promise to make the decision soon. Thanks again for all of the input!

Lets be serious. No matter what the difference $$ in price between MGM &
Gold Nugget is just pay it. Unless your a backpacker Freemont Street has
nothing going for it other than the light show experience and cheap
drinks.
It has a real sleazy nasty feel to it and doesn't feel safe.
Sorry, but plenty of folks here who enjoy and stay downtown know that's
a load of crap. My elderly parents love downtown. Either you've never
been down there or you're afraid of your own shadow.
I recently stayed at the MGM and even the standard rooms are great. All
the
attractions such as Bellagio, Mirage & TI are all within easy waling
distance.
The poster already stayed at MGM, found it "generic," and is looking to
try something different.
Don't destroy your first Vegas experience.;
The poster has already been to Vegas and stayed at the MGM. It sounds
like a newbie will be coming along, but since he/she will be
accompanied by someone with previous Vegas experience, it is just
possible that destruction will be avoided.
If you want cheap but close to
the strip consider Hooters, which is basically across the road from MGM
That much is true.

Thanks for all of your help so far, gang! 'Preciate it. I've got a
couple more questions. Ok, so it's $300 difference in pkgs for the
two.
For someone who's never been to Vegas wouldn't it be kind of exciting
to
be downtown with all the glitz and glamour? Don't I remember Golden
Nugget is up there close to Freemont St Experience? Lots of lights and
activity? Being an older hotel, i would think it may have larger rooms
which would be a nice plus. MGM was kinda generic hotel roomish when
we
were there years ago. I think the shark tank pool is way cooler than
the
lazy river!
Also, in general getting around, I remember a shuttle bus, maybe
actually
a city bus, that went up and down the strip. Seems like each ride was
$1.
Is that still available or does one have to cab around town? When we
were
there we walked most places.
Thanks all for continuing to help me put together this spur of the
minute
trip!

O, and btw, where's Nonny? Cruisin' again?
