On one of my trips to Las Vegas earlier this year, I was in my room
watching TV before hitting the casinos. I caught the local evening
news & there was picketing or a strike going on at some company in Las
Vegas. One of the picketers spoke with the news reporter. He looked
to be in his early-mid 50's & he was practically balling, saying he
couldn't get by on $59,000/year.

That was fifty nine thousand dollars a year.

First of all, keep it together if you're going to be on TV; I mean,
someone should have slapped that guy. Secondly after hearing that,
there are several possible conclusions I could draw:

1.) Las Vegas is a very pricey town to live in
2.) That guy's an idiot with money
3.) He's got a $1000/week VP habit...and loses

I have a tendency it's 2 or 3. Am I right, or can't a guy get buy in
Las Vegas on a salary of $59K/year?

We came from tax hell Wisconsin, so right off the bat, no state income tax
and much cheaper property taxes. That being said, everything else is more
expensive. Sales tax of 7.5% is a killer. My wife is a shopper and she has
found very few grocery items cheaper here than in WI. Lack of coupons too.
She actually has one of my brothers in WI sending her coupons from the
Sunday paper. He's retired and has the time!

Appearances seem very important out here. Everyone (ok generalization)
seems to need a new model Car/SUV/Truck. She has a 97 Subaru & I have a 98
Accord and there is no doubt we have the oldest cars in our neighborhood.
Car insurance is very expensive here, we pay over $1,000 per year. We used
to pay $470 total, back in WI.

Regarding #3, I still do a double take every time I leave the grocery store
and see people who checked out and their full carts are sitting there while
they play video poker in the store. It's also amazing to see the locals hit
the ATMs when we go out to local bars near the house. Gambling and drinking
can be a scary combo in this town. Self control is a must.

Regarding #2 without knowing the circumstances, who knows how much he and
his family need to live. Does he have to pay for his own heath insurance?
That can easily go over $1,000 per month. Believe me I know. Just as a
comparison point, gas is $2.29 per gallon today.

OTOH, the temperature hasn't gone below zero and I haven't shoveled the
driveway since we moved here:) Yes, I would do it again!
