I don't know if I told this story before, but it illustrates the point that
you should always have a reservation if you're going to Las Vegas.

On one of my fall trips about 3-4 years ago, I was playing blackjack at the
El Cortez.  It was about noon-1pm on a Friday.  There was this old couple by
the table talking with one of the casino managers.  They were asking for a
room & the manager was trying to explain to them that they were sold out for
the weekend.  Then the couple started going on and on about how they stay
there all the time & how terrible it is that they can't get a room, the old
"But we never reserve a room!" argument.  I think it ended with the 3 of
them going towards the front desk & I don't know how it got resolved.  I'm
thinking they bummed around all the downtown hotels until they finally found
a room at the Plaza!

They must have been in a world of their owne, thinking, that they could show
up on a Friday & get a room without a reservation.  Seems pretty naive for
folks who claim to go to Las Vegas all the time, IMHO.

Cameron,
You make an accurate observation in regards to securing your room
with a simple phone call that does not even cost you anything!

If I may, allow me to add a few points that will increae the
pleasure and excitement of your trip.

1)Find out when check in and check out times are. Be ready to not
complicate your own trip by showing up two hours early and acting
surprised when...ooops, there is no room available. (duh) If check in
is at 11:00am you can arrange a nice breakfast (I like Ellis Island),
stroll down the Strip or on Fremont downtown. Then, arrive on time
having given yourself a pleasan experience! If you should show up
early, call to see if you can just ask themto hold your luggage. Get
call tags for your bags, and YOU pick them up upon arrival. Exchange
the tags for the bags with the hotel baggage guy. If you arte short a
bag that call tag is your proof. If you get to many bags, run like
hell sqweeling like a pig in joy! :) <joke>

2) Be responsible for your own decisions. When you make a res get the
name of the person you spoke with, the res number, time and date of
the call, and the number you called. You would besurprised to know
the people that have a res at Caesars Palace and think it is at Palace
Station and demand to go to the wrong hotel.Know where your res is.

3) The cab driver lives in Vegas, you do not. The driver, contrary
to what you may have heard from others that may know less than you do,
may save you some time and drive thru the tunnel under the airport.
It whips around to the freeway on the backside of the Strip and shoots
directly to Downtown. Don't do as the uneducated do and think that
you are getting shtooked. You are being moved more quickly to your
destination. That is why the local governmental authority built the
thing. The person as well as the people that promote that untrue
rumor should get drawn and shot as their view is wrong.

4) Be prepared to have a good time. A happy mindset and planning is
the foundation to you having a good time on your vacation / business
trip. See shows, gamble, have a drink. Do just as you planned.
Don't whine, seek solutions.

5) In regards to cash. And this is just my personal opinion
here....leave it at home. Get an American Express (can be replaced if
lost or stolen) card that you put money on and withdraw as needed. If
you loose the card you can be helped, if you loose wads of cash you
will ~need help. :)

I live in Vegas six months and in Memphis six months. Vegas has been
my home since 1977.

Have the trip of a lifetime with lotso of pictures! :)
