For the last 6 years I have trusted Bob Dancer's WinPoker software as
gospel
concerning paytables and expected pay backs. He lists 8-5-4 Bonus Poker
with an expected rate of return as 97.93%. Following a link Chef Kurt
game
me, at least I think it was him, I came upon:
http://wizardofodds.com/videopoker/analyzer/
They list that same game of 8-5-4 with an expected return of 99.16%.
Anybody know why there is such a difference between them? Who do I
believe?
Any other sources for analyzing VP payouts?
Thanks,

Not sure what your program is doing Joe but my Winpoker shows 99.16% for
8/5 BP, as it should.
Pardon me for asking, but what strategy does it use to get 99.16%?
Not sure what's going on. I used change paytables, plug in the numbers and
then run analyze and this is what comes up.
RF-250
SF-50
4A-80
4- 2, 3 4-40
4 5-k-25
FH 8
FL-5
ST-4
3oak-3
2 pair 2
pair 1
97.9315% for Bonus.
What version are you running? Mine is older: 6.0.5, copyright 1997-2000.

On my self-written software, using those numbers over 20 million
hands, I get 97.8160%; if RF is bumped up to 800, I get 98.9408%.
Here's the strategy I come up with:
("makes" indicates how many ways there are to make the straight; for
example, a KQJ9 has one make (Ten) but a JT98 has two (Queen and 7)
and a 765 has three (98, 84, 43)

Full House and higher
4/Royal
Flush, Straight, Three Of A Kind
4/SF [2 makes]
Two Pair

KQJT
Ace and two high suited
KQT/KJT suited

3/SF [2 makes, 2 high]
3/SF [3 makes, 1 high]
AKQJ
3/SF [1 make, 2 high]
3/SF [2 makes, 1 high]
3/SF [3 makes, no high]

4/Straight [1 make, 3 high]

Ace and one high suited
