Re: OT - Be a nosey neighbor

Excellent advice Marsha. As one who wears a hearing aid, I would have appreciated the 'nosiness'.

This morning I brought my paper in about 7. I thought I heard an alarm off
in the distance, and figured someone had gotten carried away cooking
breakfast. I didn't have much chance to think about it because when I headed
back to the door, I heard water.

I did a little investigating, and there was a trickle coming out from an
overflow behind my neighbor's a/c compressor. I knew I was going to see him
later, and it was way too early to be calling him, so I settled for an
email.

A couple of hours later I checked outside again. Still heard both the alarm
and the water.

I took a little walk to see where the alarm was coming from and figured out
that it was a house diagonally across from me.

The man was home, watching television with all three smoke alarms blasting!
He'd gotten the ladder out, and attempted to replace the battery in one unit
without any luck. He told that he'd fallen off the ladder once before, so he
decided to let it wait until his niece got home, whenever that might be.
Needless to say, I got him straightened out.

About the same time I saw my next door neighbor. He hadn't checked his email
yet, so I told him about the water. Even standing next to it, he couldn't
hear it. He could see it because I'd told him where to look, but not hear it. He called someone to come check on it (it was the water heater, he'll be having it replaced) and then I went over to give him a little computer lesson.

Later I saw the man who lives right across the street from me, and next door
to the house where the alarms had been sounding. He'd been in and out
several times during the morning, but hadn't heard the alarms!

Several houses are closer to that house than mine is, and apparently no one,
other than me, heard them!

I'm posting this as something of a heads up... don't think your neighbors
will hear alarms coming from your house. If you hear alarms (or other sounds
which aren't supposed to be there), check on them because other people might
not hear them.
