Steve,
Honestly? Why is any VP candidate chosen? In more cases than not, it'd be
the latter reason.
Agreed. But if one is going to participate in the big spontaneous circle
jerk, or to be fair, are going to be "starry eyed followers" of the
anointed VP candidate they should at least be expected to recite some sort
of official party line as to why that VP was the right choice. There is
always the real reason, but usually it's accompanied by a credible
"official" reason. That seems lacking in the case of Ms (or is it Mrs.)
Palin.
I think McCain decided on Ms. Palin precisely because everyone told him not
to. I truly believe he enjoys his maverick image and the impetuousness that
goes with it. He wanted to make a bold move and he most certainly did.
Selecting someone like Mitt Romney certainly wouldn't spark a conversation
such as this.
After listening to his speech, I think McCain wants to distance himself from
the current administration and offer himself and his administration as an
alternative to the "change" that voters seem to be clamoring for. Selecting
Ms. Palin was certainly consistent with that message.
I referenced Dan Quayle in an earlier reply and while I don't want to
compare Ms. Palin with Mr. Quayle, I think McCain chose Ms. Palin because
she appeals to voters (young people, women, Christians, conservatives) that
wouldn't normally be drawn to him. At the very least he hopes voters will
consider him because of her beliefs.
Now, whether she's the best person to be second in command, that's something
I'm going to have to research. I certainly hope Mr. McCain did. She seems to
have very little executive or legislative experience and even less in the
foreign policy arena. She certainly talks a good game and recites the
Republican ideals and philosophies with ease. The trick is that once elected
Republicans seem to forget that philosophy very quickly. However, her short
track record indicates to me that more often than not, she uses that
philosophy as her guide.
I think her selection is consistent with the message of change that Mr.
McCain will be trying to get out to the voters. It's also an indication that
any criticism of Barack Obama's experience will be off the table. He
believes change will be a more important message than experience. Hopefully
this campaign will focus on the issues and not on personal attacks. Maybe
this is an indication that these next 8 weeks will be just about that.
We'll probably never restore (assuming it ever existed) honesty and
integrity to politics, but if we can at least begin to restore it to
political discourse things will be less frustrating. Slightly.
It would just be so refreshing if the "starry eyed supporters" of Palin
would be honest enough to admit that she was chosen for reasons other than
being the best candidate for the job. Too much to expect from the
television pundits for sure, but I would be happy if one of the AVLV
faithful Republicans could muster the courage to agree that the decision
was purely a tactical one.
I'm not a faithful Republican by any stretch, but this seems to me a
tactical decision in every way. Perhaps Mr. McCain really, truly believes
that Ms. Palin has the executive skills to be Commander in Chief, but it
would take a lot of convincing for me to believe it.
And if they could do it without referencing the opposition, well, bonus!
That being said, I still can't figure out what HW was thinking in 1988.
He was thinking whatever the guy pulling the string out of the back of his
neck was telling him to think. Some things never change.
Ventriloquism is a fascinating and frightening thing.
