OK, do you grow the citris in the Vegas soil (alkaline hardpan caliche) or store bought soil?
I guess tomatoes would be a possibility in the spring and fall??
The most prolific Meyer Lemon is in an area getting sunshine in the morning until about 2:00p- then shade. The area was once a child's sandbox and I removed much of the sand and replaced it with good old black dirt, mixing thoroughly. Drainage is assured. The roses love the sand/black dirt/well drained as well, and the area gets watered daily in the AM by drip.
The fruit salad tree is in an area with more shade- AM until about 11:00a and while it has great foliage, I don't consider it as productive as the other bush. Of course there are many other variables, including root stock, watering and different soil. There, it's more black dirt and there's less drainage. We have roses in the area as well, and they seem happy.
Roses are another plant from "back home" that seem very happy here in the desert. They prefer shade from Noon onward, IMHO and are most productive in the Spring and Fall, really taking a hit in the Summer. I don't know what others do, but I cut them back to about 18" after the heat really hits, letting them recover during the hottest part of the summer for really good fall blooms. I fertilize them year round- 4 times. The only disease I've had is some aphids and some chlorosis- treated with iron.
Lantana is a hearty desert plant with blooms all the time. You just have to cut the heck out of it or it'll take over the place. It seems to LOVE unamended soil here, as do Palms, Yucca, Cat Claw and daisy-like flowers.
I also respectfully disagree about the desert soil being unproductive. IMHO, if you add water and fertilizer, it's probably as good as MO topsoil, but I'd never say that in front of my relatives. <Grin> I don't have a green thumb, however, and therefore defer to those who do.

flush the political toilet. Despite a good
swirl, there’s still enough politicians left
sticking to the sides to foul the water.
