I was just checking prices for a trip to Reno in November. AA, out of
Tyler (where I live): $403. Delta (out of Dallas, which is a 125 mile
drive from my house): $776.

I don't mind Delta (and don't love AA by any stretch of the imagination,
especially after getting almost getting stranded last year when they had
maintenance issues with their planes), but for $376 difference, I'm
going AA.

I can't figure out what's going on or how they plan to stay competitve.

Did you check Southwest out of LOVE?? I bet you could get it for less than
$403.

And the other thing is Southwest is the major carrier for RNO- they
have the most destinations of any airline serving it, and Continental,
ExpressJet and Delta have all dropped some or all of their service
there starting in September.

Yes, I did check SW out of Love. Minimum of two stops. (One has to be
within a certain number of miles from Dallas, then either Las Vegas or
LAX for a connecting flight.) The kicker was that it was only about $40
cheaper, while it would cost at least that much in gas and extra parking
(minimum of $7 per day at DFW, vs. $4 per day at TYR) and it becomes
cheaper to fly out of American out of Tyler. Not to mention that, when
I arrive at TYR, it's a fifteen minute drive to my house, compared to
the 2+ hours from DFW to my house.

However, the main point I was making was that Delta out of Dallas was
almost twice the cost of AA out of Tyler (which involves changing planes
at DFW). I am flying Delta out of Shreveport in November to Buffalo,
but I'm using a frequent flier ticket, so I have no idea of how much it
would normally cost.

Thanks for the suggestion, though. I also thought it might be
significantly cheaper, which was why I had already checked.
