Hiya C, enjoyed the TR very much! I'll be stopping in Reno for a
couple of days in June on my way back to Portland from our club
convention at the Riv in Las Vegas. Last trip, I hit a deer just on
the edge of "downtown" Susanville about one in the afternoon, sheesh!
Appreciated you assessment of all the joints and whatnot. My habit is
to stay at the Fitzgerald. For just casual $5 blackjack play I get 3
day/2 night free room offers throughout the year. More than once I've
been at check-in when the clerk has told room hunters, "Sorry, the
whole town is sold out this week." More than adequate rooms for this
trucker and better than the wornout digs at the Riviera!
Stayed at Atlantis on a free room offer once and you're right about
the awfull casino and parking. Peppermill was fun but they were
constructing the parking garage when I was there and getting into the
joint was chaotic. Will return as I find time.
Interesting commentary about the food in Reno. I go to Reno stag and
really, eating just gets in the way of my table time. You can usually
find me in truck-stop heaven at the Top Deck at the Cal-Neva for a
quick attack at the basic food groups, grease, salt, sugar and beer.
Suggestion for a side trip since you've got transportation, Lake
Tahoe. Check the map and go to the North Shore (Crystal Bay) via Mt.
Rose Hwy. Easy driving and very senic. Crystal Bay is still like the
'60's postcards but condos are a comin'! You'll find illegal aliens
(Russkies) dealing at the Crystal Bay Club and you can visit historic
Tahoe Biltmore and Sinatra's old place, Cal-Neva Lodge. Take a moment
as you approach Cal-Neva's entrance and imagine all the folks who
passed into the building over the years. Ol' Blue Eyes, Marilyn
Monroe, JFK, Sam Giancana and the circus of FBI agents watching those
folks! If you insist on visiting the South Shore/Stateline area where
Harvey's and Harrah's are located, you'll have to transit Carson
City. Since you're from Portland too, imagine Carson City, the
capitol of Nevada as a whole town dedicated to the replication of the
Rose City's 82nd Ave.! Oh gawd, shoot me now!
To end, I'm ALL revved up for my trip to Nevada and your excellent TR
was a nice find today! Good luck in the future with that gambling
mojo!
