Comments on your report:
HOTEL:
I wonder if it was Pat who helped you at the front desk.
She is a gem and I have worked with her for several years.
Well, the changing of MR. to a coffee shop was a
disappointment for me. I am glad to hear the food is still
ok. Personally, I would still go across the street to
Golden Gate.
FOOD:
Arizona Charlie-Decatur for dinner was a real bargain when
they served the Prime Rib. They discontinued it a few
months ago and now the food is mediocre. However for
lunch, it is great. This is the ultimate comfort food
buffet. My girlfriend loves this buffet-especially the
stuffed cabbage. The Chinese food is pretty good, but the
Pizza is awful.
Wildfire--You should have ordered one of the steak
specials. Much, much, better than Ellis Island and faster
service. I also like the HUGE Pastrami Sandwich. They
serve some pretty big deli sandwiches. Wildfire is always
a great place to eat for a very small price. And service
is quick!
San Gennaro---Only ate there once because of coupon.
Nothing special as I recall.
Silverton Buffet---Getting pricey but pretty darned good.
About equal with Rampart & Cannery, much better than all
the other less expensive buffets, a tad below Orleans, Red
Rock and GVR. . More gourmet than other places, not really
a comfort food place. If you do not care for the fancier
dishes and do not want to pay over $15, don't eat dinner
here.
South Point---Joe Williams was a favorite of my family for
many years and used to play at the old Palomino Club in
North Hollywood often. What a beautiful voice. By the
way, a lot of people do not give credit to the fabulous
band that backs up Danny Gans and Clint Holmes.
Ah, Count Basie, just tap your foot. Several of his band
members lived in the neighborhood when I grew up. Louis
Belson, Horace Height Jr, Tex Ritter (and John at times),
Benny Simon, "Screaming" Jay Hawkins, Scatman Crothers,
even old Councilman Ernani Bernardi and many others. Man
that was MUSIC! Some still play at the VA in Northridge, CA
on Thursday afternoons. Swing will never die!
SPORTS BETTING:
Bartender Willie may fix a good drink, but he doesn't know
*** on betting! I stayed away from Final Four. And how
the hell anyone can bet on baseball or basketball is beyond
me. Does anyone but my nutty girlfriend bet on NASCAR?
Good report, Walt.
