Re: Stock Up Stock Down TR - Boring Travel Info

I love Southwest, as most here already know. The only airline that
allows changes to schedules with no fees, etc. Also the Rapid Rewards
program is truly rewarding, unlike most airlines, where points are
virtually useless.

Hmmmm.

I'm going to Vegas this weekend (a friend's party. Note to self: issue
appropriate taunt at correct time). I got a cheaptastic SEA-RNO-LAS
fare on Southwest in January going down, because the direct flights
were far too dear, even in January when I got this fare (coming back,
I'm doing LAS-SFO-SEA on Virgin America during their first week of
Seattle operations).

I note this week that a direct flight from SEA-LAS getting in an hour
early is a possibility- it leaves 10 minutes before my puddlejumper.
There are still open seats. I check the rules on my ticket: if I want
to fly standby, I get to pay the difference between my ticket and a
full cost business fare.

Uh, yeah. Pass. Southwest is OK (I usually fly Alaska, because their
mileage program also does not suck, and it's not too hard for me get a
first class seat flying to Vegas on them), but that was an odd little
quirk.

Stock Up: Dollar Express: $16/day rental; no waiting in line. For me
at least. Actual line at the counter must have been at least a half-
hour, probably more. Never, ever rent from these guys without using
the Express program.

I agree. I rent from Hertz Local Edition here at home, but always use
Dollar in Vegas. The lines can be exceedingly long, so I further
agree that Dollar Express is a must.

Hertz is running a half-off special across the country for weekend
rentals (PC 104182). I priced a rental with Dollar using the AX10
American Express 10% off discount and this- and Hertz was cheaper. My
rental for Soiree weekend, for instance (arrive Friday night, depart
Sunday afternoon) is $36 all-in (ridiculous taxes included) for a
Mazda 6 or comparable. I'd say $18 a day for a car is pretty damned
good, considering taxis ONE WAY to downtown from the airport are $20.

Part of the reason your car fees/ taxes/etc. are ridiculous, by the
by, is that shiny new combined rental center on Gillespie. It's funded
by a fee on your rental car.
