United will charge $25 to check a second bag unless you have status in
Mileage Plus or Star Alliance.  I wonder if there will be a customer
backlash and if they will decide this isn't a good idea.

I think the best solution is to just charge people by weight: the
200lb person would pay 1/3 less to fly than the 300lb FAT Slob! It's
the only FAIR way to do it!

Agreed.

Weigh in the passenger and their bags and then charge them by weight.

Seriously though, if United is doing it and getting away with it, the
copycats in the airline industry will be quick to adopt this policy
universally. People would then adapt by bringing less, or cramming more in
their already oversized carryon bags delaying the boarding procedure even
more. I think the real intent though is to discourage people from over
packing. When I travel alone, that's never a problem, but convincing Mrs.
Hog that she needn't bring a pair of shoes for each day of the trip has been
a real challenge over the years.

Folks are going to have to take lessons from Rob "Fancypants" Taylor
and, to a lesser extent, myself, for how to fly on a carry-on only
basis. Rob's got a whole system figured out. As for myself, I can
get 5 days worth of clothes easy in my boarding bag. It's an 18-inch
flat-typ suitcase that has a shoulder strap. It's not one of those
big, wheeled behemoths that aren't designed to fit in the overhead
bin. It's perfect for carry-on travel. I can get 5-6 shirts, 2-3
pairs of pants, half-dozen pairs of boxers & socks, along with shaving
kit, toothbrush, books, etc...

Carry-on is the only way to travel if you can swing it.
