I watched the LW show from the onset, even as a kid, and have nothing but respect for the Lawrence Welk show and his "family" of musicians. Sure, by today's "cool" standards, the costumes and jargon are humorous at time, but I'm sure that our present "cool" shows will also be equally humorous in another 40 years.

The error in your statement is the supposition that Lawrence Welk was
ever "cool." Welk was kind of a caricature even when originally
aired, and time has only intensified the extreme squareness of that
show.

Agreed, that LW understood who he was and that he enjoyed "playing himself." The shows were very reflective of the times. Remember back when one of the Lennon sisters got pregnant? During the time her belly was sticking out, she was only on the show if she was behind people or a fence, so that TV viewers didn't see her abdomen. In the late 50's, for instance, they had a wardrobe gal who added pieces of cloth across the "V" of the gal's dresses even so that no cleavage showed. All men were stalwart Christians and the women virgins.<grin>
