Just curious as to why so many Vegas locals post here on a vacation board? I would think that a residence type board would have more things to chat about for you folks? You know like local politics, schools and taxes type stuff. Most locals that I know want nothing to do with the tourist stuff that gets asked here. Am I wrong?
I don't know of a local LV newsgroup that has any real activity. Frankly, even after living here for about 6 years, I've learned a lot about LV from this newsgroup. For instance, I never knew there was an Ogden House downtown. <Grin>
In one city where we lived, there was a "general" newsgroup that did not have focused discussions. The talk ranged from politics to religion, education, home repair, barbecue, real estate and about anything else you could imagine. It was a fun newsgroup, and if there was something similar here for LV, some might follow it. The problem is that it takes a critical mass of routine posters to get a newsgroup to take off and be successful. It wasn't moderated, and I suspect that a moderated local LV newsgroup would fizzle.
Next question.... lots of people living in big tourist venues can't stand tourists, and go out of the way to stay away from them. Is this the same for you Vegas locals?
To me, the tourists ARE the reason for LV being here. LV is a machine designed to attract people from all over the world and to reduce the thickness of their wallets before sending them home with the desire to return. We can't forget that. We've lived in different cities and believe me, it's far easier to keep guests entertained here than, say, in some rust belt town in the Midwest. Living here, we seldom visit the Strip, except to catch a show or escort a guest around. Occasionally, I take a few hours to get in the car and just circle the Strip to see the changes taking place. It's incredible- almost a different Strip with each visit. To me, it's fun living in a growing, thriving city. I have no problems with tourists and enjoy seeing folks have fun, but just don't get into the traffic and clutter of the Strip in my day-to-day life. There are a lot of folks in NYC, Baltimore, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Galveston, LA, San Diego, Seattle, Vancouver etc. who don't to to the ports except to meet someone or go on a cruise, either.
One difference between LV and other cities are the LOCAL casinos, such as Red Rock, South Point and the others. These are unique to LV, pretty much, and are "community centers" for many of us. We go there to bowl, eat, see shows, see movies and for many, gamble. In the past, Mrs. Nonny and I seldom went to a movie and now we see movies every 2-3 weeks. It's good, inexpensive, fun to head for South Point, GVR or Sunset Station about 11:30a on a weekend, have lunch and then see a movie.
Besides the Strip-type of entertainment, LV is also pretty well located in the US. We can drive from here to Salt Lake City for the sights in one day, visit incredibly scenic national parks, be on Mt. Charleston in under an hour, be in San Francisco, LA or Santa Barbara within a reasonable day's drive or disembark a cruise ship and sleep that night in our own bed. Food costs are quite reasonable here, real estate taxes and insurance are comparable to other cities, homes are new, neighborhoods are clean, there's no state income tax and our politicians are probably no more crooked than in other cities. Well, strike that last part. <Grin>
