No, it's because he gambled ON BASEBALL GAMES - and even that wouldn't
have been a problem except that Rose was a manager at the time. Mickey
Mantle and Willie Mays were casino greeters at one point, but they are
both still in the Hall (mainly because Peter Uberroth reinstated them
- had the late Bowie Kuhn been in charge, not only would they be out,
but chances are this lottery business never would have happened).
Well the GA Lottery has teamed up with the
Atlanta Braves and come out with a $5 Braves scratch off ticket with a
top prize of $250,000 and also where you have a chance to win MLB
merchadise and a suite for 14 at a game at Turner Field. I am sure the
Braves and MLB are geting some money from this. Therefore they are
hypocrites for not letting Pete Rose in the hall of fame.
Again, it's not a question of gambling per se - when was the last time
a baseball commissioner complained that Vegas was taking bets on
games, or even that newspapers were showing odds lines? Rose was
banned because the MLB types feel that if a player or manager bets on
a game, they may change their strategy involving the way they play
(for example, Rose was accused of saving his better pitchers for games
on which he bet).
