The setup:
I had *REALLY* hoped to visit Las Vegas this month. But recently, the
pace of my life has zoomed to warp drive and I didn't think I could
justify taking the time to go. On February 24, I logged on The
Venetian's site to check my invited events list. To my astonishment,
there was a newly added entry:
Donna,
Like everyone else has said, this was one enjoyable report. I can only
imagine what your level of play is if you got all of this wonderful stuff
comped, although I would imagine the Venetian is probably the only place
left that truly takes care of it's players.
As for the Stones, I have Mixed Emotions about them. For a sixty year old
Mick looks great. And for a guy that's abused himself, it's really amazing
that Keith can still play at such a high level. As a drummer, Charlie
Watts was always my idol, he just has that certain something that so many
other drummers just don't have. They are truly one of the greatest, if not
the greatest rock and roll band of all time. The list of great songs
they've written and performed is positively mind boggling. Personally, I
think Tumblin Dice is still the finest rock and roll song single ever
written and when I hear it now I actually get goosebumps over it's sheer
brilliance and perfect execution. A classic example of what's right with
the Stones.
However, their last truly great album for me was Exile On Main Street,
over 30 years ago. Somehow the idea of a band slogging on and producing
only flashes and glimpses of their past greatness for thirty years sort of
betrays the whole idea behind Rock and Roll. I thought the Who should have
given it up long before Keith Moon died, but there they were chugging
along, and the same goes for the Stones.
On the other hand, there is a tremendous demand for them to keep playing.
There really aren't that many alternatives for people in our age group. My
dad had Sinatra churning out sets well into his 70s, I guess we have the
Stones.
Anyway, thanks for giving all of us a birdseye view into this event and
taking the time to share your Las Vegas experience with us. I truly
enjoyed it!
Excellent post, CyßerHoG®, and thank you for the nice feedback!
Exile On Main Street was the last Stones album that I bought. I gave up on
them after that and haven't liked much of what I've heard from any of their
more recent albums.
I do have to respectfully disagree with you--I'm glad that the old guys (all
of them!) are still touring. I've seen The Who (or "Who's Left") three or
four times since 2000 and they still put on a terrific show. Pete's playing
has never been better and Roger's voice on their last tour was stronger than
it had been in years. They are planning to tour later this year and I will
definitely be there. Pete promises that they'll have a new album out by
then, but we've heard that before and I'm not holding my breath. I'm
happy just to hear the old stuff.
The McCartney concert I attended in November was among my top three favorite
concerts ever. Paul turns 64 this year. He's still writing good material
and his voice is still great.
When I was young, I never guessed that I would still be attending rock
concerts in my fifties, but here I am. I know that the rock Gods of my
youth can't go on forever, but I'm truly dreading the day when they decide
that it's time to quit.
All the best,
Donna
