Less trivially, with no context, I drive an Infiniti because it is
singular.

I drive a 4.3 litre V8 Lexus SC430 because it's luxurious and a
better-made car than the Mercedes SLs. Screw the cost of petrol.

It's always seemed to me that the cost of fuel is overplayed when
considering the running costs of a car. My annual fuel consumption is
about £2000 (it gets added up by my company fuel card). More than 50%
of that is on business. Reducing the £1000-worth of fuel I use
personally a year by a quarter would be a significant change. So I
probably can't drop the cost of my personal fuel by £250 per year. The
annual depreciation on a £30,000 car is about £8000. The fuel cost is
just noise.

Whee! I drive a 3l V6, because it's cheaper to buy that and pay the
petrol, for the milage I drive, than to buy a less thirsty car for
more. Not particularly well made (it's a Renault), but for leather
seats, satnav, climate control, fancy music, etc - all for 2000 quid 3
years ago for a 7 year old car it's unbeatable.

My issue is the 30,000 miles I cover each year, which tends to wear out
various components - I had a turbo fail at the weekend (covered by
extended warranty). So although I agree with the idea of an old
luxurious car, I'm having to stick with a fairly new luxurious car for
the moment, with a warranty. Roll on retirement.

Warranties still run out even though you're retired, sad to say. I
only do a tenth of your mileage and am keeping my fingers crossed
(warranty expires in June).
