You mean "take another tack" (or similar). It's a count noun.
Let's assume you're writing an invitation:
"Mr. X and Mrs. X are invited to have/eat dinner at the White House."
Which of the two verbs would you use?

Neither. "Mr. X and Mrs. X are invited to dinner at the White House."
Agreed. "For dinner" is also possible, although perhaps not on a
White House invitation.
