Re: Cucumber sandwiches

As I think has been established elsethread, the default UK sandwich
starts with two slices of buttered (or at least greased) bread and puts
ingredients between them. It would be very rare to omit the grease

health grounds; I don't know anyone who likes the taste of
pseudo-butter.)

Although I am British, I must stand apart from my fellow citizens in
this matter. For as long as I can remember (certainly as far back as
my fifth birthday) I have disliked sandwiches made with any kind of
butter or pseudo-butter or spread. On ocassion, I have eaten such a
thing, but have rarely enjoyed it, and I never take that option when a
non-buttered alternative is available.

"Egg mayonnaise" is a standard sandwich-filling in the UK - hard-boiled
eggs, mashed up with mayonnaise.

I also dislike any kind of sauce, mayonnaise or "wetness" in a
sandwich, and although I like chopped egg, I will avoid any "egg
mayonnaise" where the mayonnaise is liberal enough to be detected
amongst the egg particles.

In short, I like my sandwiches dry, and despite reports to the
contrary, I find that they hold together well enough if the bread is
fresh.

This preference for "dry" sandwiches frequently causes confusion at
"made-to-order" sandwich bars. The server will ask "Would you like
mayonnaise or tomato sauce", meaning "which is your preference". I
will reply "No", and then have to prevent the server from adding one
of the offered sauces. Just the other day, a server responded with
"there's no charge for condiments" and I had to explain that I would
happily pay extra to leave them off.
