Now, back to they kosher status of giraffes (which we've done before):
They are kosher; there exists a bit of an urban legend that the reason
they aren't eaten by observant Jews is because no one knows where along
the neck to _shecht_ them properly, but the real reasons are (1)
religious: you don't eat animals for which no tradition of eating them
exists and (though perhaps that applies only to birds)
That pretty much only applies to birds
Unless you follow the decisions of "some Ashkenazic rabbis" who, just to
be on the safe side, extend the principle to other animals.
No, I don't know which ones. (Rabbis, I mean.) Ones who generally
incline to stringency, I imagine.
"The rules for birds were "all
but these specific ones", but nobody's quite sure what many of the
specific ones are, so rabbis came up with general rules that ruled out
the ones they were sure of and left in the ones people traditionally
ate, but the general rule was "eat the ones people have been eating for
a long time and you're safe". This became interesting when people
started wondering about turkeys, but it was apparently eventually
decided that they were sufficiently like the birds people had been
eating that it was okay.
