Interesting. When you write ±, and when I cut and pasted it just
now, it prints as a proper plus or minus sign, but when I enter
Alt-177 I get a blob. I suppose it all comes of running an obsolete
operating system.
You can get a ± by entering Alt-0177.
Perhaps it is because I have an older machine, but I can't seem to. I
can easily get ± from Window's Character Map, though.
The 0177 must be entered on the numeric keypad and on some machines
and/or Windows versions NumLock must be on.
I haven't used the key labeled Num Lk on the top row of my old Sony
laptop for a long time. Trying it now, all I get from the embedded,
difficult-to-read numeric keypad when I hit a J, K and L, for example,
are the letters j, k and l, not 1, 2 and 3 which correspond to them.
Mox nix because I always use Windows' Character Map.
