people attribute all kinds of opinions to Fowler without
checking what he actually wrote.

There does not seem to be heading for "approve" in the second
edition. Perhaps, it's like the old suspicion that a lot of quoted
statistics are made up on the spur of the moment.

Sheest, all he "asserted" (with a question mark?) was that he
*thought* Fowler *would have* approved.
