Hatunen's in Tucson, which has only recently ceased to be a Mexican
settlement.

And may yet be one again.

Since they are as American as the Swedes of Minnesota, the
African-Americans of the Sun Belt and the Jews and Irish of New York
City, is it fair to call Tucson "a Mexican settlement"?

Not all of them are as American as the Swedes of Minnesota, the
African-Americans of the Sun Belt and the Jews and Irish of New
York City, but most of them are. On the other hand, even the born
or naturalized citizens among them carry on their Mexican culture
to a greater extent than the Swedes of Miinesota do Swedish
culture and the Irish of New York Irish cultre. It can be kind of
fun. For instance, we have Day of the Dead festivities here in
Tucson with even the Anglos joining in. And Cinco de Mayo,
actually a minor holiday in Mexico, is very big here with a large
fiesta in one of the city parks.

But it is just a colloquialism to call it a "Mexican settlement".
A construction sometimes used in other places for areas that
might have a large foreign ethnic population. At one time
Hamtramck, Mighigan was known as a Polish town. There are many
Chinatowns across America, but the residents are largely born n
America. I used to live in Daly City, California, frequently
called "Little Manila" and soemtimes referred to as a Filipino
town.

Was this where the little houses made of ticky tacky were built?
