I didn't think that was the issue. The appropriate test would be
whether you could tell the difference between a million dollar
Stradavarius and a modern profession-quality instrument costing, say
ten thousand dollars. (If that's not the right price range, adjust
accordingly; I've never looked into buying a violin.)

Perhaps I couldn't tell the difference, but I suspect Yehudi Menuhin
could have and, moreover, between those two sets of ears are and were
a very wide range of ear qualities.
