Somebody's given you the frequency, but you can also listen live on
the BBC web site, and it is broadcast on satellite, which is how we
get it in France.

BBC Radio 3 is probably the foremost classical music station in the
world. It does broadcast some discussion (usually around the arts)
and drama, but it has a wider ranger of music than any other station
I've encountered, certainly.

Check out the schedule and Listen Live here:

I listen to my radio while I'm reading or on the Internet. The sound
system on my laptop is no where near as good as my radio's, so that
possibility is a non-starter.

Your laptop's sound card is probably quite decent. It would be the
speakers that let it down. A pair of reasonable quality headphones would
help.

Or a pair of "active" speakers - i.e. containing an amplifier.

Yes.

Just for Chuck's information there are various speaker systems available from
Argos Ireland:

I have just experimented with the

I have just experimented with the Logitech X240 2.1 Speakers:

My laptop PC has built-in speakers that do a decent job on speech but are
totally out of their depth with music.

I did not personally choose the Logitech X240 system. It came as part of a PC
bundle described as being suitable for multi-media use.

Plugged in to the laptop the Logitech does a good job with music from the BBC
iPlayer internet streams. It also does a good job with music from CDs played
on the laptop.

The sound quality is not as good as that of CDs played on my ancient hi-fi
system, but the sound through the Logitech speakers plugged in to the laptop
is much closer in quality to the hi-fi sound than it is to the sound from the
laptop's built-in speakers.
