I don't think we've had even two power cuts here in the last 14 years. It doesn't occur to us to plan for them.
A solution to light without power is skylights. I have a sky light over my stairwell and in my kitchen. You can see quite well on the darkest nights with the trickle of ambient light let through.
The security lights on our neighbours' houses - which seem to flash on for every passing moth - mean that our house is never really dark.
Funny type of "darkest". In one of our residences, dark nights are actually dark. You might see stars through a skylight, but they don't
really provide any illumination. You can, however, look up at the stars to check that you're still walking down the road and haven't wandered into the forest.
Wouldn't the trees indicate such a diversion, rather than the stars?
