That's an interesting one. Without the "up", "smell" could very well be
taken to mean "stink", at least on the first reading. With the "up" it
removes that ambiguity, but it otherwise adds nothing to the meaning. To
my (BrE) ears the "up" sounds a little wrong, but it is used more often
in AmE ("listen up" etc).
