In the newer developments, lots are much smaller now and two-story
houses are much more common. In the older, established prestige
areas, it's not unknown to see one house torn down and two houses
built in the same space. The lots are long, but narrow.

That's been happening here for some time, as land for residential use
is scarce and expensive here.

Opposite the flat I used to live in was a large rectory with a disused
chapel next door. (The chapel was used on a couple of occasions by a
TV or film company for its ambience.) I suppose the lot was about 50 x
25 yards. They demolished the buildings and built a four-storey block
of flats with parking for eight cars on that site.

On the road adjacent to where I now live there was an old four-bedroom
house at the top of the hill, with a huge garden. They demolished
that and built one detached and five semi-detached houses on the site,
each with four bedrooms. Only three of the houses have garages; the
others have no parking except in the street, which I thought was
against planning regulations.
